For the Love, Kelly Slater
For the Love is a high quality, beautifully laid out, hard cover coffee table book that looks at the multifaceted layers of surfing’s enigma, nine times world champ Kelly Slater.
When 1976 World champion, Peter “PT’ Townend mentioned to master surf journalist Phil Jarratt that no one had ever really delved into the psyche of the mysterious overachiever, Jarratt decided to take up the challenge.
The resulting collaboration between Slater and Jarratt is a gem. Kelly opens up on all facets of his life, his childhood, his contest tactics, music, personal relationships, spiritual beliefs and his political stance.
Some chapters start out as a comment on a photograph and grow organically into a full on analysis of something like tube riding.
His friends and compatriots all shed light on what makes Kelly tick. Tom Curren, Shaun Tompson, Eddie Vedder and Pamela Anderson were some of many names interviewed.
It is an amazing insight into his life and how this man has achieved the things he has. The high quality photographs are worth the price of the book alone.
For the Love is available at book shops for $49.95 or if you’re up in Noosa drop into Back Beach at Noosa Junction and pick up a signed copy from Phil Jarratt.
